Autograph manuscript of Autolycus in service by Robert Louis Stevenson [manuscript], ca. 1880.

Autograph manuscript of a three-act play or farce. Autolycus has no connection with Shakespeare's Autolycus except the common name, which may have been suggested by a vague similarity of character. The third act appears not to be finished, though its length suggests little to be added. The fourth sheet is wanting, leaving a gap in the text. This is the only nearly complete ms. among several which are cataloged herewith (N.b.32, N.b.33). On the versos of 11 leaves of the MS is a draft of the first six scenes of Act I, representing a somewhat different version of some scenes, probably earlier than the nearly complete version. The portion of text originally written on the fourth sheet of the long version, and later lost, is here supplied.

32 leaves ; 33.5 x 20.5 cm.
